Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), the medical term for “Acid Reflux” is defined as the product of abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus thus, creating a mucosal damage, likewise known as the chronic symptom. This disease strikes adult primarily, while infants and children can also be affected. Normally spurred by eating certain foods, if not pregnancy, or taking a sleep right after eating a heavy meal, a large number of persons suffer from acid reflux at one time or another. Heartburn or acid indigestion is another name that refers to acid reflux. Heartburn, the major symptom of Acid Reflux in the esophagus, is described to cause a burning uneasiness at the back of the sternum. The symptoms may come as coughing, voice transformation, hoarseness, constant ear ache, or sinusitis. The complications brought upon by acid reflux may lead to esophageal ulcers or worse this can lead to esophageal cancer. However, constant heartburn sensations do not necessarily mean that one has captured GERD already. The risk occurs when heartburn happened more than once a week, this occasion could possibly lead in developing GERD. The usual cause of GERD is the increase in acidity or gastric acid production in the body, obesity, pregnancy, or tight-fitting apparels, these all can add to the problem. The yeast infections are also thought to be one of the causes of GERD-like symptoms. An added ironical cause of the GERD is the insufficient production of stomach acid in the body. The explanation says that the valve, the hollow organ with a flap that insure the one-way course of fluid through the organ, once emptied triggers acidity in the intestines. If the valve fails to open, the contents of the stomach will be blended into the esophagus, and then irritation occurs. Meanwhile, there are already several treatments for GERD today, one of which is the balance and healthy eating habits. Now if proper diet fails to work, one can shift to medication therapy or surgery as suggested by the doctors. Below are the lists of several selections of Acid Reflux treatment: • Proper Diet: the natural way to cure Acid Reflux is through change in their eating habits. A good number of people affected by GERD found success in following this method. Avoid the food ingredients which can intensify heart burn such as caffeine, soft drinks, and smoking. Avoid eating two hours before sleeping; likewise, avoid lying down after taking meal. These are the regular suggested change in lifestyle. • Another easy way to treat GERD is to elevate the head of the bed. The pharmacologic therapy, the combination of prevention of food two hours before sleeping and the rise of the head of the bed, there is a great chance for a patient to gain a 95 percent relief. The rise of the head of the bed is suggested to range for only 6 to 8 inches or 20 cm. Using this method the backflow of gastric fluids will be hampered. • Drug Treatment: Drugs reduce the secretion of the gastric acid, for instance and famotidine and omeprazole lessen the secretion of gastric acid and the Antacids counteract the acid. • Surgical treatment: the Nissen fundoplication, the standard surgical treatment for Acid Reflux, the medication process will only cover a short period of time. The function of this is to support the sphincter, a spherical bond of muscles that opens and closes to let the food or waste to pass, as well as stop Acid Reflux, and of course restore the hiatal hernia.

And this is very true for those people who are suffering from acid reflux. Acid Reflux Symptoms In Babies Acid reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD, is a condition wherein fluids from the stomach are regurgitated or refluxed back into the esophagus. This chronic condition causes pain or heartburn and the acids that are refluxed into the esophagus may damage the lining of the esophagus. There are many ways to manage Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease as there are quite a number of prescription and over the counter drugs available. However, these drugs have been found to cause more harm than good since these only address the symptoms and not the root cause of acid reflux. And since GERD is a chronic condition, the prolonged use of these drugs has also been found to be bad for the body. This is the reason why natural remedies for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease have become more popular. And among the many natural GERD remedies, apples have been known to effectively cure the condition. Permanently Cure Your Acid Reflux Click here There are no clinical studies to prove the effectiveness of apples as remedy for acid reflux. However, more and more people who suffer from the condition are happy with the relief they are getting by eating apples for their GERD symptoms. When the stomach starts digesting the food that you eat, it produces acids to help break down food. Apples, which are natural antacids, when eaten, gives the stomach signals that it does not need to produce more acid. Apples are also one of the many alkaline-forming foods that lower the amount of acid produced in the body, thus lessening the chances of an acid reflux from happening. Eating apples when one is suffering from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease also helps in digestion. Chewing a raw apple increases the production of saliva, which reduces the need for the body to produce more acid, preventing the occurrence of an acid reflux. Aside from preventing acid reflux, apples also protect and minimize the chances of developing esophageal cancer because it is one of the best natural sources of quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that belongs to the flavonoid family of phytochemicals. Quercetin is a powerful antioxidant that reduces free radical damage and helps reduce the chances of cancer, stroke and heart disease, as well as speed up the healing of damaged esophageal tissue and reduces inflammation. Quercetin is primarily found in the bright red skin of apples so when used for treating GERD, it is best to eat fresh, raw apples everyday. Cure Your Acid Reflux Now!Has your acid reflux been plaguing you for too long? If you could have access to a guaranteed natural cure for your GERD would you want to try it? Well now you can. Paul Brewer and his team of researchers at Pacific Natural Remedies Inc have developed The GERD Elimination System, a report that details 12 powerful natural remedies combined in one easy-to-follow system to help you finally eliminate your GERD, acid reflux and heartburn for good. Using A Unique 5-Step Method No One Else Will Tell You About Click here

To treat gastroesophageal reflux you need to suppress the acid production in your stomach, the oral medication is used to reduce the amount of acid and to help the muscle’s function of the lower esophagus sphincter or stomach. Antiacids and other medications and lifestyle changes may help you with the acid reflux reducing.

Drug Treatments

First drug you are suggested to try is an H2 blocker drug, for example famotidine (Pepcid AC), cimetidine (Tagamet HB), ranitidine (Zantac 75), and nizatidine (Axid AR). If there appear no results then you are suggested to take omeprazole (Prilosec).

Next step in the treatment of the acid reflux is high-dose H2 blockers, with this treatment some patience have no symptoms at all. This kind of treatment is used in patients with moderate to severe gastroesophageal reflux.

The best solution is to continue treatment even if the symptoms are relieved, so as the condition will not return. If the treatment doesn’t give results then you should have some other tests: endoscopy and other tests to be sure that the cindition we are treating is gastroesophageal reflux, sometimes it may be mistaken with other diseases such as: bile problems.

Surgery

Surgery is indicated if patients have complications, if the recommended treatment has failed, in younger people, in patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux, to improve regurgitation. Persistent condition of gastroesophageal reflux is more severe than considered before, and the safety of the long term medication is also uncertain.

But without medications, surgery by herself cannot cure gastroesophageal reflux and in some patients even after surgery the antiacids medication is necessary. In some patience there has been observed the return of the symptoms even after one year after surgery, so before having the surgery they must disscuss all the options of treatment with a surgeon and medical physician.

Patients with Barrett’s esophagus have an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer and performing surgery for gastroesophageal reflux doesn’t reduce the possibily of developing cancer. So, the truth is that surgical procedures have many complications and high failure rates and do not always cure gastroesophageal reflux.

One of the risks is represented by the general anesthesia, of infection and internal bleeding. A complication that causes discomfort is gas-bloat which occurs because of the tightened low muscle of the esophagus which doesn’t allowed food to pass in the stomach. Doctors advise to eat small amounts of food at one meal and to chew it thoroughly.

Other treatment options are: open surgery, proton pump inhibitors drugs, diet modification. The surgery is not recommended to patients with dysmotility, pregnant women, esophageal cancer, extreme obesity, but where the medication fails the laparoscopic fundoplication is the only solution.

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a fairly common affliction. It is characterized by bouts of intense heartburn or a burning sensation in the back of the throat. A lot of the time, the pain is experienced during sleep periods. This is not the case all the time, but it is common to have attacks at night.

As stated earlier, heartburn is symptomatic of GERD. If a person is having attacks of heartburn more than three times a week, acid reflux disease is a good probability for that person. Prompt attention is required to avoid serious damage to the lining of the esophagus or the formation of ulcers both in the stomach and in the esophagus.

There are many drugs that can be used to treat acid reflux disease. You have probably heard of Zantac 75, Prilosec OTC or Nexium. These are available at local drug stores and can help the symptoms, yet do nothing for the condition itself. They hold a small dosage that is allowable over the counter without a prescription.

In order to treat the entire condition, however, a physician’s care is recommended. Acid reflux disease is also a known cause of esophageal cancer and other related maladies. This is why you should seek a physician immediately.

Acid reflux can be treated in several ways including watching the diet, elevation during sleep and pharmaceutical therapy. There is no tie between spicy foods and GERD, but it doesn’t help. More important is the amounts of food that are eaten. When you overeat, the stomach has to produce more acid than your stomach can get rid of.

Foods that are hard to digest also can bring on attacks of GERD. Foods like peanuts, milk or dairy products and such force the stomach to, again, produce more acid than is necessary. The excess finds it’s way into the esophagus and results in a painful heartburn sensation. The attacks feel like heartburn but much more intense and can last for hours at a time.

To avoid attacks during sleep periods, it is common to elevate the head slightly at bedtime. This keeps the throat area higher and gravity is employed to keep the acid in the stomach. What happens during sleep is that the valve between the stomach and the esophagus relaxes (or possibly is weak) and allows stomach contents to enter the esophagus and up to the throat. This is when you feel the heartburn sensation mentioned earlier.

The causes of GERD are still under research, but there are two basic situations in the disease. Either the stomach simply produces too much acid or the stomach cannot process a normal amount of acid. Either way, the effect is the same.

So if you are experiencing heartburn more than three times a week or your heartburn is excessively painful, consult a physician immediately. If you do have GERD, you are running the risk of other more serious conditions like stomach cancer, esophageal cancer and ulcers all along the digestive tract. GERD has been tied to these diseases and this is a real danger.

The hiatus hernia is the partial drift of the stomach through the diaphragmatic muscle isolating the abdomen from the thorax. The only symptoms are often chest pains and heartburn; in severe cases an operation is available but in moderate cases the condition can be deled with drugs.

The stomach usually goes up into the chest by the esophageal hole which is the weakest point between abdomen and chest cavity. There are two most common types of hiatus hernia: one occurs when the upper sphincter binding esophagus and stomach slides up through the diaphragm and the other when a part of the stomach gets into the chest beside the esophagus.

Risk factors for hiatus hernias are smoking, age over 50, obesity and pregnancy. The age weakens the diaphragm, coughing due to smoke and overweight increase the pressure inside the abdomen. Rarely a congenital hiatus hernia occurs when the diaphragm or the stomach have not developed correctly during the intra uterine life.

Refined hernial symptoms are burning sensations o a feeling of warmth both called heartburn and caused by the reflux of the acid gastric content into the esophagus. If symptoms persist and get worse in time, the condition is called gastroesophageal reflux disease. This hernia can also cause pain and discomfort behind the sternum and mime a heart attack.

Hiatus hernia symptoms usually get worse after eating, drinking coffee or hot drinks, and lying down or binding forward. Spicy foods will generate burnings as well. All these symptoms are more likely to be caused by indigestion so certain diagnose of hiatus hernia can only be established after several testing.

Occasionally, hiatus hernias can lead to severe complication due to the acid reflux into the lower part of the esophagus. Acid damages can produce an ulceration of the esophageal layers in time and pain, burning sensations will worsen. Bleeding ulcers can cause patients to vomit blood. Immediate medical consult is required to stop the bleeding. Bleeding ulcers also lead to anemia and the body is in lack of sufficient red blood cells to support a healthy oxygenation.

When healing, esophageal ulcers can cause strictures; this will lead to regurgitation and difficult, painful swallowing.

The hiatus hernia increases the risk of Barrett esophagus, a pre-malign stage when the outer layer cells change their anatomy and function. Persons with gastroesophageal reflux are more likely to develop esophageal cancer.

All patients with indigestion symptoms must be seen by a gastroenterologist and undergo a barium X-ray that can detect a hiatus hernia and an endoscopy with a long telescope introduced into the abdomen.

Seeking the opinion of your doctor is a good first step but before we look at what you should discuss let’s take a look at what constant heartburn symptoms mean.
Symptoms Of Persistent Heartburn
Persistent heartburn means you are experiencing symptoms at least twice week and means something more sinister could be at play. Heartburn is a symptom of GERD and other tell tale signs include:
- difficulty swallowing
- food travelling back into the mouth after swallowing
- burning chest pain
- coughing and sore throat
Obviously seeking medical advice is the best alternative because unchecked, more serious complications could arise. Acid rising back into the esophageal can lead to serious damage overtime. Constant heartburn not treated could result in ulcers in the esophageal or stricture which means the esophageal narrows over time. Worst case scenario may be developing Barrett’s esophagus which in turn could result to esophageal cancer.
Lifestyle Changes
It’s human nature to not want to change a routine, particularly if you are enjoying it and this is why many people treat heartburn as just a common ailment which will pass. But let me ask you this. . . when you are experiencing an attack don’t you wish you had made an appointment to discuss the frequency of your attacks with him/her?
Remember, persistent heartburn at least twice a week and over a lengthy period of time unchecked could be really undermining your health. Your doctor can discuss and assess your condition and take the appropriate action. If you are still a little shy, try some lifestyle changes. Here’s a few to get you started:
- Consider the food you eat and try to isolate the food which seems to always correspond with an attack. Eliminate it from your diet.
- Watch what you drink. Coffee or alcohol for example. See if a heartburn attack follows the consumption of one or the other or both. If it does, cut it out or moderate.
- Don’t eat late night snacks particularly just before going to bed and preferably not within four hours of turning in.
- Watch your clothes. . . are they tight fitting? Bad sign for heartburn.
- If you r symptoms occur because of your sleeping position try elevating your head a few inches when you go to bed.
These are some common lifestyle changes normally associated with persistent heartburn and if you’ve tried them and your still experiencing frequent symptoms then you really should be seeing your doctor.
Persistent Heartburn Relief
If you suffer constant heartburn and are loathe to talk to your doctor, consider the risks without proper medical advice. Self diagnosis can be a dangerous past time particularly if the treatment methods used only treat the symptoms.
You have a number of medical medications available to you as apart from the common antacids, pump inhibitors and H2 blockers designed to prevent and neutralise acid production in the stomach, have proven effective. If your problem is a damaged esophagus then surgery options may need to be considered.

Over the past several months the ‘chicken-little’ syndrome has befallen us and a lot of smart people have lost their sense and think that the sky is falling. Don’t get me wrong there are some areas in the country in which I would not currently choose to buy investment property. However, in my opinion, Columbus Ohio does not fall into this category. I would actually say comparatively it is a safe bet and if you’re looking to pick up cheap wholesale houses, why not do it when everything is on sale! Why is Ohio’s capital city a safe area to invest in wholesale property?According to PMI Group, a leading mortgage insurer and finance company of over 30 years, Columbus Ohio is one of the top 10 safest cities to buy investment property. PMI recently released their fall 2008 risk index, in which they listed the top 10 safest and the top 10 riskiest areas to invest. They rated Columbus Ohio property as having a less than 1% chance for declining prices over the next 2 years, whereas the worst on the list have an over 99% chance of falling prices. In addition Forbes magazine listed Columbus Ohio as one of the top 10 places to live well. This translates to Columbus being a great place to live with a lower cost of living, which in turn makes it a more attractive place for those looking for opportunity in an economic downturn. Columbus Ohio also made the top 10 list of CNN Money Magazine for best cities to live. It is not only attractive because of affordability but it is also a desirable place to live because of what the city has to offer. This should be good news to landlords and retailers alike. So if the metropolitan area is so great why are there so many good deals?Columbus has been affected by the housing market ‘bubble’ to some degree. The current foreclosure crisis and falling prices have given way to an influx of great investment deals that are hitting the market. This has provided opportunity for investors to purchase great wholesale deals for pennies on the dollar. With a minimal chance of further decline in real property prices it would appear as though we are reaching the bottom here in Columbus. More silver lining in a weak economy. . . Materials costs are plunging and contractors are begging for work. Therefore any investment property picked up at a great price especially at wholesale price has even more inherent potential profit. This is due to the fact that with materials down and contractors desperately seeking work the cost of rehabbing distressed properties has fallen as well. Ohio’s capital city is certainly a great place to pick up wholesale investment property at a significant discount. So landlords (buy and hold investors,) rehabbers (retailers) and just plain bargain hunters are all certain to profit or benefit. During a time when everyone is losing money as a direct result of fear, be sure to use analytical reasoning in deciding on your financial health rather than emotion fueled by the media.

Heartburn, or GERD - gastro-esophageal reflux disease as it is known, is caused by the coincidence of two medical conditions. The first condition contributing to acid reflux disease is the backward flow of food and acid from the stomach to the esophagus. Nonetheless, the reflux does not always result in symptoms of acid reflux disease or changes in the organic tissues, and can happen in healthy individuals as well, when it is referred to as “physiologic gastroesophageal reflux”.
The second factor encouraging acid reflux is a malfunction of the LES, the lower esophageal sphincter. The LES is a circle of muscle acting as a valve between the esophagus and the stomach, measuring 3-4 cm, some two to three times thicker than the proximal esophagus. In cases of acid reflux disease, the stomach contents is pushed back into the esophagus because the LES does not shut properly. This is then called acid reflux disease, when symptoms of the disease then follow.
The typical sensation of acid reflux disease is persistent (twice weekly or more) heartburn. Heartburn is the burning feeling in the chest or the throat, when the stomach contents is pushed back to the lining of the esophagus. As people in good health may also have light reflux, occasional heartburn is common as well and does not immediately mean acid reflux disease.
Other sufferers of acid reflux disease may also feel chest-pains or suffer from coughs, hoarseness in the morning, vocal changes, problems in swallowing (notably lumpy foods), lasting earache, burning pains in the chest, nausea or sinusitis. Some sufferers describe sensations of food being stuck, choking or tightness in the throat. This is caused by the continual flow back of stomach contents in contact with the esophagus, resulting in swelling of the esophagus due scars from histological damage.
Acid reflux disease left untreated can have serious health consequences. These include constriction, bleeding, ulcers and spasms of the esophagus. When the acid from the stomach gets to the trachea as well as the upper esophagus, several severe conditions such as asthma, sinusitis and pneumonia can occur. Some patients can develop a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus, where abnormal shapes and colors of cells occur in the esophageal lining. This is an initial stage before esophageal cancer, notably in adults over 60 years old.
There are three options for treating acid reflux disease: surgery, medical therapy and holistic therapy that includes changes in diet and lifestyle and taking specific herbal supplements. Using surgery merits very careful consideration, given that certain underlying conditions can be complicated, such as constriction and muscular contraction disorders. PPIs and H2 blockers are among the options for medical intervention in cases of acid reflux disease. While it is possible to apply prescribed medications or acid blockers like these, remember that the results are sometimes only temporary and that conventional medicine can lead to serious side effects.
GERD, seen from a holistic viewpoint, is a warning signal for an internal imbalance of consequence that must be correctly treated. For this reason, alternative medicine such as herbal medicine, changes in lifestyle, homeopathic remedies as components of a complete holistic schedule are the clear recommendation for heartburn sufferers.
